Carnegie Hall

Carnegie Hall Website

Carnegie Hall is one of the most famous concert halls in the world but their website was in need of a refresh. This project provided a rich opportunity to learn about senior users and their unique needs, and gets to the heart of why I love what I do.

ROLES: Research, UX Design, UI Design

understanding the senior user

  • Carnegie Hall’s primary user base was adults 60+ years old

  • Between the ages of 25 and 60, the time users need to complete website tasks increased by 0.8% per year

  • Legibility and the ability to understand where and what to click to complete a task became more of a priority with senior users than other user groups

  • Dexterity is also an important consideration, as users over 60 often have trouble navigating pull-down or fly-out menus if their mouse and trackpad motions are less stable

  • Senior users rely on search more than other age demographics

ADDRESSING PAIN POINTS

  • Proposed designs were mindful of accommodating seniors without alienating other users

  • Links and clickable areas were clearly demarcated

  • A text size adjuster could be used to make the font smaller or larger

  • The main menu had functionality that was easy to navigate with an unsteady hand

  • Any menus that appeared on hover were accompanied by alternative means of navigation, such as on the calendar page

  • The search function was placed at the top for easy access
