Gardasil 9 Responsive Website
Gardasil 9 is a vaccine administered in patients aged 9-26 for the prevention of nine strains of the human papillomavirus (HPV) – the most strains covered by any HPV vaccine to date. Upon FDA approval, the old version of the vaccine (Gardasil) was to be phased out and replaced by Gardasil 9. Like the previous version of the vaccine, the previous version of the website was outdated and needed a refresh.

SPOTTING OPPORTUNITY
Market research informed the development of three target personas
Taking into account each persona’s goals, key content areas were developed to drive site architecture
User journeys helped to define the evolution from HPV awareness to vaccine awareness, and to address barriers along the way
from m-dot to mobile responsive
Using the personas and user journeys as a springboard, new architecture was developed to organize and house the proposed content. The first version was developed in a workshop with the client
As the site architecture was underway, work on responsive design templates began using a mobile-first approach. The home page offered multiple entry points, based on the content most relevant to each user segment. Secondary pages (1.0-4.0) provided an overview of each section, while detail pages contained content modules including bold infographics, video content, and large text broken out into digestible sections
Some content, such as the Important Safety Information, is required by law and must be presented with equal visual weight to the main content – in these situations, the goal was to keep it as unobtrusive as possible while still meeting the requirement
Closing the loop
The user experience does not end with the website or a single doctor’s appointment; The vaccine is administered in a series of 3 doses, so it was critical to ensure that busy parents remembered to schedule appointments on time. Two tools were developed for this purpose:
First, remembering to get the HPV vaccine is easier when it is positioned chronologically in context of other childhood vaccines. A flow was created to help parents keep track of which vaccines their child has already received, and which ones they need and when
Second, a messaging stream was developed to send series completion reminders via text/email at the required intervals
Final Product
Websites for pharmaceutical products don’t have a reputation for being beautiful, cutting edge, or easy to use. With the Gardasil 9 update, I and my team sought to challenge that expectation by creating a vibrant, intuitive experience that empowers parents with the information they need
